  • 1 cup whole milk
  • Red or pink food coloring

For the Frosting:

  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tbsp heavy cream
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Pink or red food coloring

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat and Prepare the Pans

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan and a 9-inch square cake pan (if you don’t have a heart-shaped pan).

Step 2: Make the Cake Batter

  • In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
  • In another bowl, beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  • Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  • Mix in vanilla extract.
  • Gradually add the flour mixture and milk, alternating between the two.
  • Stir in red or pink food coloring until you reach your desired shade.

Step 3: Bake the Cake

  • Pour the batter into the prepared pan(s).
  • Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  • Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack.

Step 4: Assemble the Heart Shape (If Needed)

  • If using a round and square pan, cut the round cake in half.
  • Position the halves on the two upper sides of the square cake to form a heart shape.

Step 5: Make the Frosting

  • Beat butter until smooth.
  • Gradually add powdered sugar while mixing.
  • Stir in heavy cream, vanilla, and food coloring.

Step 6: Decorate the Cake

  • Spread a thin layer of frosting for a crumb coat and chill for 15 minutes.
  • Apply the final frosting layer, smoothing it out with a spatula.
  • Decorate with sprinkles, chocolate shavings, or fresh berries.
